The Government Accountability Office (GAO) is the legislative branch agency that audits, evaluates and investigates federal programs and spending for Congress, often called the congressional watchdog. It is headed by the Comptroller General, who serves a single fifteen-year term, and its headquarters is in Washington, D.C., with field offices in several cities.
